How to choose indoor lighting
Get the layers, colour and fittings right.
1
Match the room
Layer ambient (ceiling/pendant), task (downlights, reading) and accent (wall) light. Bright, even light for kitchens; warmer, softer light for lounges and bedrooms.
2
Pick a colour temperature
2700–3000K (warm) for living rooms and bedrooms, 4000K (natural) for kitchens and bathrooms. Many LED fittings offer 3CCT so you can switch.
3
Check the fitting
Note the cap/base (E27, GU10, G9…), whether it's dimmable, and the IP rating for bathrooms (IP44+ near water).
Indoor lighting — FAQs
What colour temperature is best for a living room?
Warm white (2700–3000K) is the most popular for lounges and bedrooms — cosy and flattering. Kitchens and bathrooms often use 4000K for a crisper light.
Which lights are safe for bathrooms?
Use IP-rated fittings near water — IP44 or higher. Bathroom and mirror lights list their IP rating; filter by IP rating.
Can I dim LED fittings?
Many are dimmable (some are 3CCT too). Check the product, use the Dimmable filter, and pair with a compatible dimmer.
What's the difference between a pendant and a chandelier?
A pendant is usually a single hanging fitting; a chandelier is a larger multi-arm statement piece. Both hang from the ceiling.
