How to choose your LED strip
12V vs 24V vs 220V
Voltage decides your power supply and how far the strip can run before dimming.
- 12V β short runs, cabinets, vehicles, simple cabling.
- 24V β longer runs with less voltage drop; the all-rounder.
- 220V β plug straight into mains for very long single runs.
IP rating β indoor or wet?
The IP number tells you how protected the strip is against water and dust.
- IP20 β dry indoor only (coves, ceilings, cabinets).
- IP65 β splash & rain resistant; patios, bathrooms.
- IP67 β submersible-grade; ponds, exposed outdoor.
What you'll need
Three things turn a reel into a finished install:
- Driver sized above your total wattage (add ~20%).
- Aluminium channel for heat, diffusion & a clean line.
- Connectors / controller for corners, joins & RGB.
LED strip light FAQs
What size driver do I need for my LED strip?
Add up the wattage per metre Γ your total length, then pick a driver rated about 20% higher. Example: 14.4W/m Γ 5m = 72W, so choose a 100W 24V driver. Not sure? Send us your run length and we'll size it for you.
Can LED strip lights be cut to length?
Yes β strips have marked cut points (usually every 25β100mm). Cut only on the marked line and rejoin with a clip-on connector or by soldering. Project rolls of 10m, 20m and 50m are available for larger jobs.
What is the difference between COB and SMD LED strips?
COB strips pack hundreds of chips under a continuous phosphor layer, giving one seamless, dot-free line of light β the best choice where the strip itself is visible. SMD strips use individual diodes spaced along the strip β bright and cost-effective, best mounted inside a diffused aluminium channel or hidden in a cove.
Should I choose a 12V or 24V LED strip?
24V strips run further from a single power feed β typically up to about 10m before voltage drop, versus about 5m on 12V β so they suit coves and longer runs. 12V suits short runs, cabinets and vehicles. For very long single runs, 220V mains strips need no driver at all.
Can LED strip lights be dimmed?
Yes. White strips dim with an LED dimmer module wired between the driver and the strip, or with a dimmable driver. RGB and colour-changing strips dim through their controller or remote.
Which LED strips can I use outdoors?
Use IP65 or IP67 rated strips outdoors. IP65 handles rain and splashes; IP67 is for very exposed or wash-down areas. Pair it with an IP-rated driver kept in a protected spot.
Do LED strips work during load shedding?
Yes β 12V and 24V strips are ideal for inverter and battery backup systems because they draw very little power. A full 5m run of 10W/m strip uses only about 50W.
Which colour temperature should I choose?
2700β3000K warm white suits lounges, bedrooms and dining rooms. 4000K natural white suits kitchens, bathrooms and task areas. 6000K cool white suits garages, retail and commercial spaces.
