Warm White vs Cool White vs Daylight | LED Colour Guide

One of the most common questions we hear at our showroom is: which white should I buy? With LEDs available in warm white, cool white and daylight, it is easy to end up with a room that feels too clinical, or too dim. Here is a simple guide to getting it right.

What is colour temperature?

Colour temperature is measured in kelvins (K) and describes how warm or cool a light looks. Lower numbers are warmer and more yellow; higher numbers are cooler and more blue-white. It has nothing to do with brightness, which is measured separately in lumens.

Warm white (2700K to 3000K): cosy and relaxing

Warm white gives off a soft, golden glow similar to traditional incandescent bulbs. It is flattering, relaxing and ideal for spaces where you want to unwind.

Best for: bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, lounges and hallways.

Cool white or neutral (3500K to 4100K): clean and balanced

Cool white is crisp and neutral without feeling cold. It is the all-rounder for spaces where you need to see clearly but do not want a harsh feel.

Best for: kitchens, bathrooms, home offices and laundries.

Daylight (5000K to 6500K): bright and energising

Daylight mimics midday sun. It is the brightest-feeling white and best for detailed or safety-critical tasks.

Best for: garages, workshops, security lighting, studies and task areas.

A quick room-by-room cheat sheet

Bedroom and living room: warm white (2700K to 3000K)
Kitchen and bathroom: cool white (around 4000K)
Home office: cool white to daylight (4000K to 5000K)
Garage, workshop and security: daylight (5000K to 6500K)

Do not forget brightness and dimming

Colour temperature sets the mood; lumens set the brightness. As a rough guide, a cosy bedroom needs less light than a busy kitchen. If you like to change the mood, choose bulbs labelled dimmable and pair them with a compatible dimmer switch. Using a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer can cause flickering.
