Ceiling Fans with Lights: The Space-Saving Solution for South African Living Rooms
South Africa's long, warm summers make ceiling fans one of the most useful additions to any home. And when you combine a fan with an integrated light fitting, you solve two problems with one fixture — freeing up ceiling space and cutting down on wiring costs. Here's everything you need to know.
How Big a Fan Do You Need?
Fan size is measured by blade span (diameter). Match it to your room size:
- Under 10m² — 90–107cm (36–42 inch) fan
- 10–20m² — 122–132cm (48–52 inch) fan
- 20–40m² — 142–152cm (56–60 inch) fan
- Large open-plan spaces — Multiple fans, or consider a 183cm+ model

DC vs AC Motors
This is the most important spec on any ceiling fan. DC (Direct Current) motors use up to 70% less electricity than AC motors, run quieter, and have more speed settings. They cost more upfront but pay for themselves rapidly. AC motors are cheaper and perfectly adequate for occasional use or smaller rooms.
Blade Pitch and Airflow
The ideal blade pitch is 12–15 degrees. Too flat and the fan spins without moving much air; too steep and the motor struggles. All fans in our range are specified with airflow ratings (m³/min) — the higher the number, the more air moved.
Remote Control and Smart Features
Modern ceiling fans increasingly come with RF remote controls (longer range and more reliable than IR) and some integrate with smart home systems. Our smart home range includes fans compatible with voice control via Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
Reversible Direction: The Winter Trick
All quality ceiling fans have a reversible motor. In summer, run anti-clockwise (blades push air down, creating a wind-chill effect). In winter, reverse to clockwise at low speed — this pulls cold air up and pushes warm air that collects near the ceiling down into the room, reducing heating costs.
