LED Downlights vs. Surface Downlights: Which Is Right for Your Home?
One of the most common questions we get at Wynberg Lights: should I go recessed or surface-mounted? The answer depends on your ceiling type, budget, and the look you're going for. Here's the complete breakdown.
Recessed (LED) Downlights
Recessed downlights sit flush inside the ceiling — you only see the trim ring and the light. They're the modern standard for new builds and renovations with plasterboard or drywall ceilings. The advantages:
- Clean, uncluttered look — nothing protrudes from the ceiling
- Can be angled to highlight artwork, shelves, or kitchen counters
- Easily dimmable for atmosphere control
- Available in fixed and adjustable (gimbal) versions
The catch: you need at least 150mm of ceiling void above the board to install a recessed fitting. If you're on a solid concrete ceiling, surface-mounted is the only option.
Surface Downlights
Surface downlights (also called oyster lights or surface-mounted spots) sit on top of the ceiling rather than receding into it. They're the practical choice for:
- Concrete slab ceilings with no ceiling board
- Rental properties where major renovation isn't allowed
- Garages, laundries, and utility spaces
- Replacing old bulkhead or batten fittings
What About GU10 vs Integrated LED?
Recessed downlights come in two types: GU10 lamp holders (which take a replaceable GU10 bulb) and integrated LED modules (where the LED is built into the fitting and can't be replaced). GU10s offer more flexibility — you can swap colour temperature or wattage. Browse our GU10 LED bulbs and recessed downlights range.
Key Specs to Check
- Colour temperature: 3000K (warm) for living areas, 4000K (neutral) for kitchens and bathrooms
- Cut-out diameter: the hole size the fitting needs — measure before you buy
- IP rating: IP44 or higher for bathrooms, IP65 for outdoor use
- Wattage: a 7W LED downlight replaces a 50W halogen
